NATIONAL ELIGIBILITY TEST

The UGC conducts National Educational Test (NET) for lectureship eligibility and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) to ensure minimum standards for the entrants in the teaching profession and research in Humanities (including languages), Social Sciences, Computer Science and Applications and Electronic Sciences.  The test for other Science subjects is conducted by the CSIR jointly with the UGC.  The tests are conducted twice in a year generally in the month of June and December.  For candidates who desire to pursue research, the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) is available for five years subject to fulfillment of the conditions attached.  The UGC has allocated a number of fellowships to the Universities for the candidates who qualify the test for JRF.  The JRFs are given to the top position holders in the NET Eligibility Criteria for appearing in NET Examination.

a) Candidates other than SC/ST category who have secured atleast 55% marks (without grace) in Masters    Degree (or) equivalent examination in Humanities (including languages) and Social Sciences, Computer Science and Applications, Electronic Sciences etc. are eligible for this test.  For SC/ST category candidates those who have secured atleast 50% marks (without grace) in Masters degree are eligible for this test.     

b) Those candidates who have even secured 54.99% marks and below (even 49.99% marks and below for SC/ST candidates) in Masters Degree Examination are NOT eligible for this Test.  THERE IS NO PROVISION OF ROUNDING UP OF MARKS TO MAKE IT 55% (50% FOR SC/ST).  

c) Candidates who have appeared (or) will be appearing at the qualifying Masters Degree examination and whose result is still awaited (or) candidates whose examinations have been delayed may also apply for this test.  However, such candidates will be admitted provisionally and shall be considered  eligible  for  award  of JRF/Lectureship eligibility only after  they have passed the Masters Degree examination (or) equivalent with at least 55% marks (50% in case of SC/ST category candidates).  These candidates must submit their relevant P.G. Marks-sheet and Degree/Provisional Certificate within two years of the declaration of NET Exam result.

d) The Ph.D. degree holder candidates whose examination were completed by 19th September, 1991(irrespective of date of declaration of result) shall be eligible for relaxation of 5% of marks from 55% to 50% to appear in NET Examination.

e)Candidates have to appear in the subject of their Post Graduation only.  The candidates whose Post Graduation Subject is not covered in the list of subjects at item No. 9 of UGC-NET Advertisement (also available on our website),  he/she may appear in the subject related to the one he/she had at Post Graduation.   Candidates are requested to check the subject list.  Wrong selection of subject by the candidate in light of item

(e) will make candidate ineligible to get NET certificate.

f) CANDIDATES SHOULD NOTE THAT THEIR CANDIDATURE IS PROVISIONAL.  THE MERE FACT THAT AN ADMISSION CARD HAS BEEN ISSUED TO A CANDIDATE WILL NOT IMPLY THAT THE COMMISSION HAS FINALLY ACCEPTED HIS/HER CANDIDATURE.   CANDIDATE  MAY NOTE THAT THEIR CANDIDATURE WILL BE DEEMED FINAL UPON VERIFICATION OF ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS WITH REFERENCE TO THE DOCUMENTS ENCLOSED WITH THEIR APPLICATION WHICH MAY BE CALLED FOR AGAIN.

SCHEDULE OF EXAMINATION

The UGC conducts NET Examination twice in an year (i.e. in the month of June and December).  In this regard the advertisement for June and December examination are published in the months of February and September respectively in the Employment News.

SCMEME OF TEST FOR UGC-NET

(a) The test will consist of three papers. 

           
Paper-I is of general nature intended to assess the teaching/research aptitude of the candidate.  It is primarily designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension and divergent thinking.   Paper-II consist of short questions based on the subject selected by the candidate.  These papers will consist of a test booklet containing 50 objective type items (questions).  The candidates will have to mark their response for each item on the answer sheet attached at the end of the test booklet. 
 
At the start of the first session, Paper I is distributed and the answer sheets will be collected after the allotted time.  Paper-II is distributed fifteen minutes after the end of Paper-I in the same session. Paper-III will consist of only descriptive type of questions from the syllabus of the subject selected by the candidates.  The candidates will be required to attempt questions in the space provided in the answer booklet.
 
A CANDIDATE WHO DOES NOT APPEAR IN PAPER I WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO APPEAR IN PAPER-II/PAPER-III.
 
For Visually disabled candidates, thirty minutes extra time will be given for both paper-I and Paper-II.  In paper-III, forty five minutes extra time will be given.  They will also be provided with a writer who is a graduate from the same faculty, but in a discipline other than that of the candidate.
 
Paper-III will be evaluated only for those candidates who are able to secure a minimum of such aggregate marks in Paper I and II as fixed by the Commission.
 
SCMEME OF TEST FOR CSIR-NET

The test will consist of three papers comprising two separate sessions on the same day.
Paper I will be of general nature intended to assess the teaching/research aptitude of a candidate. It will primarily be designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension and divergent thinking. 
The Paper II and Paper III will be selected by the candidates from one of the subjects mentioned above. The Paper II and III will correspond to knowledge at the post-graduate level in that subject.

Papers I and II will be of one hour and fifteen minutes duration and will carry maximum of 100 marks. These papers will consist of a test booklet containing 50 objective-type items (questions). The candidates will have to mark their response for each item on the answer-sheet provided at the end of the test booklet. 

At the start of the first session, Paper I will be distributed and the answer-sheets will be collected after the allotted time. Paper II will be distributed fifteen minutes after the end of Paper I in the same session. No negative marking for wrong answers in Paper I and Paper II.

Paper III will consist of only descriptive-type of questions from the syllabus on the subject selected by the candidates out of those mentioned above. Paper III will be held in the second session for two hours and 30 minutes duration and will carry a maximum of 200 marks. 

The candidates will be required to attempt questions in this paper on the space provided in the answer booklet.

Paper III will be evaluated for those candidates who are able to secure a minimum of such aggregate marks in Paper I and II as fixed by the Commission. The necessary information regarding syllabus for all the three papers will be provided by the respective test centers.

Candidates have the option to answer either in Hindi or in English in Paper III in all subjects except languages. In case of Computer Applications and Electronic Science the question papers will be in English only. In case of any discrepancy in English and Hindi version of questions in Paper I, II and III, the English version should be taken as final.

SCHEDULE OF DECLARATION OF EXAMINATION RESULT

The result of June, UGC NET Examination is declared in the month of October. Similarly December, UGC NET examination result is declared in the month of April.

The NET Examination in Science Subjects is conducted jointly with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi.
