GATE
GRADUATE APTITUDE TEST IN ENGINEERING
It is an All India Examination conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology & Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, on Behalf of the Ministry of Human Resource Development(MHRD), Government of India.
OBJECTIVES OF GATE ARE
- To identify meritorious & motivated candidates for admission to Postgraduate Programmes in Engineering, Technology, Architecture & Pharmacy at National Level.
- To serve as benchmark for normalization of the undergraduate Engineering Education in the country.
Further, admission to postgraduate courses, with MHRD Scholarship/Assistantship, in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy at Engineering Colleges/Institutes in the country will be open only to those who qualify through GATE.
Some Engineering Colleges/Institutes specify GATE as mandatory qualification even for admission of students to Postgraduate Programmes.
ELIGIBILITY:
a) Bachelor’s degree holders in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Pharmacy & those are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes. Those who have completed Sec-A are also eligible.
b) Master’s degree holders in any branch of Science/ Mathematics/ Statistics or equivalent & those who are in final or pre- final year of such programmes.
*However, if the degree is in M.C.A., the candidate should have had courses in Mathematics at the Bachelor’s or Master’s level.
c) Candidate’s in second or higher year of the four year integrated Master’s degree programme(Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/ Technology or in third or higher year of five-year Integrated Masters degree programme in Engineering/ Technology.
Before applying for GATE, candidate must assure themselves that they have chosen the right paper, which qualifies them to become eligible to seek admission to the specific programme, they are interested in. The criteria for postgraduate admission with scholarship/ assistantship differ from Institution to Institution.
